GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROPOSED BUDGET CUTS:
Mayor Bloomberg plans to cut the Department of Education budget by $450
million for the school year 2008/2009.
New York City is projected to have a 4 billion dollar surplus for next
year.
New York State is paying its portion of the school budget, despite the
fact that it will have a deficit for the year.
School Chancellors Joel Klein is defending Mayor Bloomberg’s planned DOE
budget cuts.
The DOE budget cuts will mean that schools will have to: cut teachers
(resulting in even more overcrowded classrooms), assistant principals, and
support staff; eliminate literacy programs; eliminate after-school
programs; eliminate weekend tutoring; reduce spending on books and
supplies; etc.
